Demolition starts on former Italian Gardens site

Workers started tearing down buildings Monday morning to prepare for a six-story 240-space parking garage on the site that formerly housed the Italian Gardens restaurant in the 1100 block of Baltimore Avenue.

The Kansas City Business Journal reported in June that the Tax Increment Financing Commission of Kansas City had approved the diversion of $5.5 million in tax revenue to reimburse City Center Square Parking LLC, developers of the parking garage at 1110 Baltimore. The garage, to be fronted by ground-floor retail space, will provide additional parking for City Center Square across the street at 1100 Main St.

New York City-based Time Equities Inc. owns City Center Square and City Center Square Parking LLC. Phillip Gesue, Time Equities' acquisitions director, said Monday that the garage should cost about $6 million to build, plus an additional $1 million to buy the land and perform demolition.

The garage is scheduled for completion by early summer, Gesue said.

Italian Gardens closed its doors Dec. 29, 2003, after 78 years in business.
